Arts Council presents “Seeing” art exhibit opening February 9, 2023

The Florida Keys Council of the Arts is proud to announce the upcoming art exhibit, 'Seeing’ - an exhibition of contemporary art featuring the artwork of artists Ruth Gilmore Langs and Scott Jeffries. Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, February 9th from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the historic Gato Building. Enjoy an artist’s meet-and-greet and refreshments.

The exhibition embraces the work of 2  Artists, Ruth Gilmore Langs and Scott Jeffries. The world of Ruth Gilmore Langs is filled with shapes, textures and colors. She is an abstract painter in Islamorada, Florida and says it’s all about losing the trees and the ocean and trying to emote and communicate through brushstroke, color and energy. For Ruth, Art is the language of the human spirit, the rhythm, beat and song of the self. Sometimes difficult to decipher but, with surrender, one may travel into the heart of the painting. Once the veil is lifted, you may journey into the glory, passion and vulnerability of one’s human soul. And, allow yourself to see again, as a child, when at once everything is magic.

Scott Jeffries' work has always leaned toward a kind of abstraction.  His technique is a pronounced abstraction: trees transformed into wisps of color; bodies simplified into shapes; fish turned into loud, neon personalities; faces, just splashes of primary color. He allows himself room to explore his fresh perspective of the world. Ultimately, Scott's painting is an irreverent expression of his sub-conscience, an invitation into his brain--a place where space and form are imagined from a decidedly different angle. But even so, each piece doesn't drown in its own abstract principles. They are anchored in the sometimes comedic, but always earnest reality of Scott Jeffries.

The exhibit is part of the Arts Council’s Art in Public Buildings program, designed to offer an opportunity for artists to exhibit their work beyond a traditional gallery space and enhance the environment of those who work and visit the Gato Building. The show continues through March 9th, 2022 and the Gato Building is open Monday through Friday, from 9am to 5pm. Free Parking is available. The show will be n view through April 30th, 2023.

This exhibit was sponsored in part by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, the State of Florida: Division of Cultural Affairs, as well as other supporters. Additional support comes from donations by show visitors.
