The 2006 South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowships for Visual and Media Artists

The South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowships for Visual and Media Artists recognizes professional artists who:

  • have established a recognized body of original works of art within an artistic discipline, created over a sustained period of time;
  • have established a track record of exhibitions/screenings and critical commentary regarding their work;
  • are pursuing this work as a means of livelihood and/or a way to achieve the highest level of professional recognition.

THE PROCESS

All submissions are grouped by county, assigned a number upon arrival at the Department of Cultural Affairs’ offices (2-D and 3-D combined) and projected for viewing by the panelists according to the sequence of their assigned numbers.

THE REGIONAL PANEL

A regional visual arts panel consisting of regional visual arts experts will review submissions in the visual arts category and forward their recommendations to the national panel. A regional media arts panel consisting of media experts will review the submissions in the media category and forward their recommendations to the national panel. Panelists are chosen from academia, museums and past recipients with consideration given to relevant experience, gender and ethnicity to ensure balanced perspectives.

The visual arts jurors view the visual arts entries, beginning with Miami-Dade (the largest group), then Broward, Palm Beach, Martin and Monroe counties. Slides are shown in groups of five according to sequence, with a brief pause between artists. During this viewing, jurors make notes of artists they wish to see for a second time. Through repeated viewing of slides, a process of elimination continues until the recommendations to be forwarded to the national panel are selected.

The media jurors view the media entries, beginning with Miami-Dade, then Broward, Palm Beach, Martin and Monroe counties. Submissions are shown one at a time according to the sequence of their assigned numbers. During this viewing, jurors make notes of artists they wish to see for a second time. Through repeated viewing, a process of elimination continues until the recommendations to be forwarded to the national panel are selected.

THE NATIONAL PANEL

The national panel consists of five members, of which three are experts in the visual arts and two are experts in the media arts. The members of the national panel do not separate at any time and view all of the regional panel’s visual and media arts recommendations together.

Support materials are offered to the national panel for the review of each recommendations. However, the judges prefer to review the work anonymously for the first round. Finalists are selected through a process of elimination via a repeated review and discussion of the work and support materials. Reviewing the submissions of the visual and media artists recommendations from the regional panel requires two days.

For both visual and media artists in 2006, the judges may award up to 4 fellowships for Miami-Dade County, 3 for Broward County, 1 for Palm Beach, and 1 for the combined Counties of Martin and Monroe.

The judges have the latitude of taking one $15,000 fellowship per County and choosing to award two $7,500 fellowships in its stead.

The number of visual arts applicants for the 2005 cycle from these counties were: Broward, 51; Martin, 9; Miami-Dade, 141; Monroe, 26; and Palm Beach, 38.

AWARD LEVELS

A two-tier award level of $15,000 and $7,500 to be recommended at the judges’ discretion has been established. Awards of $15,000 will be accompanied with a five-year moratorium; awards of $7,500 will be accompanied with a three-year moratorium.

Applications must be signed and notarized.

SUBMISSIONS

Artists may submit up to ten images produced in the past two years. Works are judged on artistic excellence and consistency of the body of work. Choose your group of images thoughtfully to compose a single, coherent and focused statement about your work.

QUALITY OF SUBMISSIONS

The quality of the images submitted is of extreme importance. Unless you are a skilled photographer, get a professional photographer to shoot your work. (If you need recommendations of professional photographers, contact your local Cultural Council).

Submissions should have true and consistent color, even lighting and proper exposure.

Use a tripod, measure and level works to avoid keystoning of paintings and other distortion.

Utilize black or neutral backgrounds or mask out backgrounds with photo tape to block out distractions and unnecessary information.

SEQUENCING OF SUBMISSIONS

Project the images in a dark room while making your decisions. Concentrate on creating a single body of work and be attentive to the order in which you sequence the works.

Begin with your strongest and most compelling work and end with the second strongest.

Create a transition from image to image for the works in between.

You should only submit one detail.

Number the slides/images from one to ten according to your sequencing.

Ask a friend (preferably someone not familiar with your work) to accompany you when you review your selection and provide you with feedback.

SLIDES

Make duplicates of your slides and retain your originals.

Label each slide with your name and work’s title. Indicate the front and top. Submit in an 8.5” x 11” clear vinyl slide sheet with top openings for insertion of slides.

Don’t submit slides with tape on them, and if identifying your slides with printed labels, make certain the labels are securely affixed.

CD-ROM

You may choose to submit ten (10) image files in JPEG format on one CD-ROM. Image size should be consistent. Suggested image size is 72 ppi/dpi/resolution and should not exceed 8” in either dimension, height or width. Digital images should be numbered corresponding to the identification sheet.

INSTALLATIONS AND KINETIC SCULPTURE

For installations or kinetic sculpture, you may submit a maximum three-minute DVD in place of slides, which should include six to ten work samples and be available to play on a standard DVD player. Please test!

Include a corresponding identification sheet as instructed.

All submissions are anonymous. However, please write your name on the DVD disc.

IDENTIFICATION SHEET

Complete a clearly documented identification sheet for either slides or CD-ROM or DVD. List each submission by number, with title, medium, dimensions and date of work.

Installation artists: at the top of the identification sheet, provide a brief description to help enhance the panel’s comprehension of the work. Clarify your intent or purpose in creating the piece.

RESUME

Update your resume. Include exhibitions, commissions and education. Have someone else proofread both before submitting.

SUPPORT MATERIALS

You may also include up to two additional support materials, such as catalogues or reviews.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Explain in no more than one page: the body of work, your philosophy, technique, or other information not apparent through the slides/images that may aid the judges in more fully comprehending you as an artist or your work in general. Describe the primary motivations for producing your work. What compels you to produce your work? If there’s been a shift in its direction, explain why. Be simple, clear and direct in your language. Read it out loud to someone not familiar with your work. Does your intent come through?
