Call to Artists Airport Mural Project

Monroe Council of the Arts is pleased to issue a Call to local artists for the commission of an exterior mural at the Key West Airport.

The site is one side of the air conditioning tower on the main terminal building. The tower rises above the main roofline of the building. The side of the tower facing the parking area and South Roosevelt Blvd. is the site for the mural. The dimensions overall are 22 feet high and 19.2 feet wide, including a frame element. Dimensions within the frame element are 20 feet high and 15.10 feet wide.

This Call to Artists solicits submittals by artists who would like to be considered for this commission. The jury will invite three finalists to submit site-specific proposals. Budget for the mural is $ 3,500.

PROJECT BUDGET

The budget for the project will not exceed $3,500 and includes design, artist’s expenses, materials, construction, and installation of the work of art. Electricity and water are available at the project site. Artists will need to consider tropical climate.

ARTIST QUALIFICATIONS

Preference in consideration will be given to artists who meet one or more of the following qualifications:

The artist has received awards, grants or fellowships within the past five years.

The artist’s works are included in private, corporate, or museum collections.

The artist has had at least one, one-person exhibition (or has been included in at least one exhibition) at a museum or not-for-profit exhibition space within the past five years.

The artist has completed other outdoor public commissions on a similar scale.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Artists may submit a sketch of a proposed mural, but it is not required. It is sufficient to submit samples of past work that demonstrates the ability to design and carry out this project.

Please provide five (5) copies of the following written documentation, collated in the following order:

A slide list including the name of the artist, and for each slide, the number corresponding to the slide, the title, media, size, date, and location (if site-specific) of each work of art listed.

A current professional resume.

In one page, tell us about yourself: you may wish to explain why we should consider your work, or how your previous work relates to the project. Maximum length: 1 page.

Provide one (1) set of the following:

A maximum of ten (10) 35mm. 2" by 2" slides, placed in a slide sleeve. Each slide must be labeled with the number corresponding to the slide list and the name of the artist. Place a dot at the lower left-hand corner of each slide.

A self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage to cover the return of slides. Only slides will be returned.

Artists who wish to be notified that their submittal has been received should include a stamped, self-addressed postcard that will be mailed back upon receipt of the submittal.

TIMELINE

August 15, 2000

Until 5:00 p.m.

Artists not selected notified.

Project overview meetings with three finalists. Finalists present their proposals to jury (45 minutes each).

October 2000

Artist’s contract issued

November 2000

Install work of art

REVIEW PROCESS

Three finalists will be invited to develop a site-specific proposal. Finalists may be invited to present their proposal in person.

The jury will consider appropriateness to the site, artistic excellence, and durability of materials, maintenance, and safety.
