General Information The South Florida Cultural Consortium is an alliance of the local arts agencies of Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. The Consortium’s Fellowship Program assists eligible visual and media artists living in the South Florida region through direct grants awarded solely on the basis of creative excellence, to improve artistic skills and encourage career development. Fellowship Amount Non-matching fellowships of $15,000 and $7,500 will be awarded at the discretion of the judges to selected visual and media artists from Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Monroe, and Martin Counties. Fellowships of $7,500 will be limited to no more than two per county. The fellowships are to be used by the individual artists according to his or her needs. Please note that fellowships are taxable as provided by federal law. Refer to IRS Publication 520, “Scholarships and Fellowships,” for complete information on reductions (www.irs.ustreas.gov). Eligibility All South Florida professional artists (those residing in Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade or Monroe County) are eligible to apply. A professional artist is defined as a person who has created a recognized body of original works of art within an artistic discipline over a sustained period of time, and who is pursuing this work as a means of livelihood and/or a way to achieve the highest level of professional recognition. Applicants must be over 18 years of age. Artists must have resided and worked in one of the participating five counties from October 1, 2002 to October 1, 2003 and must apply from the county of their residence. Awards will be made contingent on proof of residency. Non-professional students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees, non-professional who engage in art work as a hobby, employees of the participating County governments or the South Florida Cultural Consortium’s member local arts agencies are not eligible. Professional artists returning to school in pursuit of an undergraduate or graduate degree may apply. A moratorium of five years is imposed on recipients of the $15,000 fellowship from 1999 and earlier. A moratorium of three years will be imposed on recipients of a $7,500 fellowship. Judging will take place in November 2003. Recipients will be announced in early 2004. Submissions will not be returned until January-February 2004. Awards will be presented in the Spring of 2004. The exhibit featuring the recipients’ works will take place at the Miami Art Museum. The members of the South Florida Cultural Consortium provide to their resident artists the services of an artist registry at no charge. The programs keep comprehensive track of South Florida artists for the purpose of promotion and exhibition. The registries are to the visual arts what the “yellow pages” are to any business. Your work can be viewed by curators, art critics, art collectors and the public through the files. In addition, a limited number of artists will be eligible for inclusion in the websites of the Broward County Cultural Affairs Council (www.broward.org:/arts); Florida Keys Council of the Arts (www.keysarts.com); Martin County Council for the Arts (www.martinarts.org); Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs (www.tropiculturemiami.com); and Palm Beach Cultural Council (www.pbccc.org).
