Writers Guild Award Application Deadline Extended: Saturday, March 10, 2007

Saturday noon is the deadline for applying for The Fourth Annual Key West Writer’s Guild $2,000 Award.

To qualify for the award, which is administered through the Florida Keys Council of the Arts, you must be a resident of Monroe County, a member of the Key West Writers Guild, and working on either a novel or a work of non-fiction. Applicants must read from their work at two meetings of the Writers Guild.

10:00 a.m. on January 13, 2007 is the last chance to read from the manuscript to be submitted. The application may be turned in at the meeting, held at Kelly’s Caribbean Grill, 303 Whitehead Street, in Key West, or earlier, on a weekday, to the Arts Council office at 1100 Simonton Street.

Submissions should include a completed application form and two copies of a manuscript or manuscript excerpt of 30 pages or more, double-spaced and in 12-point type only. The complete application and instructions are posted in pdf format at Key West Writers Guild Award on this website.

The award is supported by private funds and administered by the Florida Keys Council of the Arts. The award recipient will be announced in late March on www.keysarts.com.

Donna Smith received the first annual award for her novel in progress, “Let Me Tell You Where I Came From,” a fictional account of three generations in an Appalachian family. Second-year recipient, Cricket Desmarais, won the award for her novel in progress “A Hundred Fires,” an historic novel set in the Keys during the ‘30s and ‘40s. Chris Yayas won the third annual award for an autobiographically-based work in progress, “Only One Way Out.”
