I was trained by two Abstract Expressionist painters: Clarence Giese, an American Expressionist who taught me during my Junior Year Abroad in Vienna in 1962, and Joachim Loeber, “the last living German Abstract Expressionist,” who was my teacher from 2001 until his death in Key West (in 2014). I see my forbears in the members of the Der Blaue Reiter, the Russian Expressionists (Alexej van Jawlensky and Wassily Kandinsky), the Germans (Franz Marc and August Macke) and the German/Swiss painter, Paul Klee; my work is also influenced by the Frenchman Robert Delaunay and the Viennese Egon Schiele. Although most of these painters died well before I was born, their influence continues in the American school of Abstract Expressionism.
